Aubry Bend Internship

September 2018 - December 2018
Week 1

I started in a middle school math classroom with Ms. Brown. I am working with a standard math

Ms. Brown is an amazing teacher to work with. She invited me to two planning meetings with the sixth grade teams. I will go to science and math teams to talk about their curriculum and their outline for the weeks to come.

Today I went to a planning meeting for 6th grade science, they will be working on air masses. They are going to start with air pressure and move on to density. It was very interesting to see how they plan out their curriculum to make it all tie together for the kids.

Week 4
Week 2

Today i met with Mrs. Vail, Ms. Brown to plan for the math classes in a planning meeting. For standard, they are going to begin fractions and the simple facts about it, like a improper to mixed fraction. They will also begin adding fractions and simplifying them. They will have steps and practice problems for them to use. They are using a blend of technology and traditional learning to help the kids. Since the kids do have chromebooks, they watch videos and can see practice problems from the chromebook. They also have cards/ stations that they use with problems that they work on with groups. It is very interesting on how they plan, especially since they both teach more than one subject and how they try to make it easy for the kids to learn.

Today the standard class learned how to subtract fractions. The setup for their notes were the same as addition. After their notes, they then had independent practice. The advanced class had a full decimal pretest.

The standard class was much better today, they walked in and were a lot calmer and put their chromebooks away as soon as they got in. Today, the standard class worked on independent practice, where they were given a choice between working independently or working around the room with their cards, which are like problem stations.

Week 3

Today there was a sub, so the students worked independently on practice work on chromebooks. Lots of kids were having trouble on the problems.

Advanced was very quiet and was working the entire time.

Today i stayed at the middle school the entire day to shadow Ms. Brown. I went to some meetings with her and got to see how her other classes worked.

Today, the students worked on their chromebooks on some review practice problems. Standard and Advanced both did this, even though they were on different units.

Week 4

The students in standard took the decimal test today. This test included adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. Advanced took notes on percents, decimals, and fractions today.

The students got split up into groups based on their test scores, since they did not go as planned. Ms. Brown and I worked with the groups that needed the most help. The students who did good worked on a separate assignment.

Standard continued to work in the small groups today. There is improvement in their understanding of the topic. Advanced took their test today on fractions, decaimals, and percents today.

Week 5

Standard took a decimal "check" today as a make-up test/ quiz. There was 8 questions and once they were done, they could try again to get a better score (1 time) or they could move on to a practice sheet that was on their chromebooks. Advanced worked on metric system conversions.

Standard continued working on the practice problems that are on their Chromebooks. Advanced continued working on their metric unit conversions and did some practice problems that were on their Chromebook.

I observed today in the classroom. Standard was very good today. They worked on fractions, decimals, and percents today. The students have already learned fractions and decimals apart, but they are now connecting them together. In addition, they are learning how they also can turn into percentages.

Week 6

Yesterday and today, the standard class worked on task cards throughout the room. The standard class is working on tax, tips, and discounts. They will take their assessment tomorrow. They are starting to get into the phase of knowing my first name is a really big deal and were very restless today. The advanced class is continuing integers and learned about multiplying negative numbers today.

Today, the regular class is working on ratios and the difference between numbers. They are using fractions to show the change and the scale factors. They are using multiplication and division to get the missing numbers. The advance class is continuing to work on negative numbers and they will have an activity on Friday that will be given and assessed by me. The activity that we are going to do is task cards from Teachers Pay Teachers. They include regular, word, and challenge problems. On the back of the card there are actual tasks for them to complete.
